GIS Program

What is GIS?

GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems. GIS can be used to create maps, plot coordinates, and many other things. GIS combines layers of information to form a map. Depending on what you want to see, you use different layers. GIS can be used to plot points on a map you have created.

What is GIS used for?

According to GIS.com, "GIS combines layers of information about a place to give you a better understanding of that place." The different layers of information are used to create a map to analyze the information being studied.

Community mapping is a program with the goal of helping people learn more about the areas where they live. By completing a community mapping project, people are able to find solutions to problems in their communities and improve the way of life for everyone.

For examples of community mapping programs done in other states, take a look at http://www.orton.org/projects/current.

Why is Utah 4-H involved in GIS and community mapping?

There are several reasons why Utah 4-H is involved in GIS and community mapping:
Over 1,500 youth and adults have been trained in the use of GPS in the Utah 4-H GPS program. After learning GPS skills, the next natural step is to move into GIS and community mapping. Community service has always been an integral part of 4-H. Using GIS to perform community mapping projects is a new way for youth to be involved in their communities.

According to a report issued by the Department of Labor, jobs requiring skills in Geospatial Technologies "is one of the 10 occupational groups projected to have the fastest growth of employment between 2002 and 2012."

Utah 4-H receives international recognition

Utah 4-H has already received international recognition for being involved in the community mapping program. An article titled, "Community Service Merging with GIS Technology" in the April - June 2004 issue of ArcUser focused on 4-H's involvement in community mapping, and featured Utah 4-H as an example.

How did Utah 4-H get involved with GIS and community mapping?

Through the ESRI GIS Program for U.S. 4-H, 8 clubs in Utah received grants of the ArcView software package. Part of the grant includes access to the ESRI Online Campus where 4-H members can take part in online classes to learn the necessary skills for using ArcView.
