Fun with Foods Level 1 

(Ages 9-11)  Welcome to an exciting year in 4-H Foods! You are starting on a new adventure! Your projects in foods can be exciting and rewarding as you learn about different types of foods and how to prepare them for your club and your family.

Activities focus on discovering how the microwave works, learning to use the microwave safely and preparing foods such as scrambled eggs, apples, popcorn treats, fudge, breakfast bites, chili dip and desserts. (40 pages)

Activities focus on understanding watts and preparing foods such as potatoes, vegetables, pudding, bar cookies, beans, upside down cake, brownies, cheesy macaroni, sloppy joes, and chicken nuggets. (40 pages)

Activities are more advanced and include on microwave techniques like shielding, defrosting and browning. Youth learn to prepare such foods as casseroles, lasagna, chicken, pork chops, fruit crisp, coffee cake and candy. (40 pages)

This level emphasizes techniques such as adapting recipes for the microwave, blanching fruits and vegetables and stacking whole meals. Youth will learn to prepare jellies, double layer and bunt cakes, pies, stew, casseroles, and quiche. Youth will also learn to make gifts such as play dough, bird feeders and bake dough ornaments. (40 pages)
